Frequently Asked Questions – FAQ

Do you have questions about Osteopathy at Highlight Osteopaths in Barry?

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a form of healthcare that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of musculoskeletal problems such as back pain, neck pain, joint pain, and certain headaches. Treatment is tailored to the individual and may include hands-on techniques, advice, and exercises to support recovery and long-term health.

What happens during the first appointment?

Your first appointment will include a detailed discussion about your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, and any relevant health concerns. This is followed by an assessment, after which your osteopath will explain their findings and discuss an appropriate treatment plan. If suitable, treatment will usually begin during this appointment.

How long are appointments?

Initial consultations typically last 45–60 minutes. Follow-up appointments are usually around 20–30 minutes, depending on your individual needs.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No. Osteopaths are primary healthcare practitioners, which means you can book an appointment directly without a referral. However, if your symptoms require further investigation or another form of care, we may recommend that you consult your GP or another healthcare professional.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Some aspects of assessment and treatment can be easier if the area causing your symptoms can be examined directly. For this reason, patients are often asked whether they would be comfortable undressing to an appropriate degree, and wearing underwear that you would feel comfortable being examined in can be helpful.

However, there is absolutely no obligation to undress, and treatment can often be adapted to accommodate your preferences. Your comfort, dignity, and informed consent are always paramount. Any examination or treatment will be fully explained beforehand, and you are free to decline or stop any part of the assessment or treatment at any time. 🙂

Will treatment hurt?

Most osteopathic treatment is gentle and easily tolerated. Some techniques may cause discomfort, particularly if an area is already painful or sensitive.
Rob saysI will explain what I’d like to do and will work within your comfort levels throughout the appointment. 🙂

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments required varies depending on the nature and duration of your symptoms, your general health, and your treatment goals. Many people experience improvement straight from the first session and only require a few, while others may benefit from a longer course of care.

Can I bring someone with me?

Of course!
If having a friend, family member, or chaperone present would help you feel more comfortable, you are welcome to bring someone with you. 🙂

Will I be given exercises?

Where appropriate, you may be given advice and exercises designed to support your recovery and help you manage your symptoms independently between appointments.

Can I still attend if I feel nervous about treatment?

Absolutely! Many people feel anxious before their first appointment, particularly if they have never received osteopathic treatment before. We encourage you to ask questions and discuss any concerns you may have. Treatment decisions are made collaboratively, and nothing will be done without your understanding and consent.
RobIf you feel nervous, give me a ring. We can chat by phone or video and we can meet each other before you come in 🙂
